Local Activities

While the island is fairly small we wanted to point out a collection of activities and experiences to do on the Hamakua side of the island. These are all within 30 minutes of the home, where the red heart is on the map. The following items are located on the Eastern coast between Hamakua, Hilo and the South Point.

Explore Hawai’i volcanoes national park.

Ola Brew is a Big Island based brewery with two taprooms, one in Hilo and one in Kona.

Often covered in snow, Mauna Kea is an inactive volcano and is home to the largest astronomical observatory with telescopes. A must see.

Maku’u Farmers Market offers a variety of tropical fruit, produce, crafts and cooked food. There’s yummy Thai, Filipino and Mexican food to eat! Only on Sundays.

The valley and Hakalau Beach is a beautiful spot for enjoying gorgeous ocean views and taking in the natural beauty of the area.

80 foot falls that cascades over a lava cave that according to legends, is home to ancient Hawaiian goddess Hina, goddess of the moon.

This massive cave is part of a 25-mile-long lava tube created by the Mauna Loa Lava flow of 1880.
