This massive cave is part of a 25-mile-long lava tube created by the Mauna Loa Lava flow of 1880. The lush plant life is due to the rainfall in Hilo. Bring a flashlight if you decide to go deeper into the cave. There are 2 caves, one to the left and one to the right. The best time to visit is January through July. No dogs are allowed. It will be muddy, rocky and there may be bugs. Trailhead: From Hilo, follow Hwy. 200, the Saddle Road, to the west. Locate Kaumana Caves State Park between the 4 and 5 mile markers (right after 4 mm). The parking area is on the south side of the road, but the park is on the north side.
